TEXTILES

Woven textiles is the main area that I have been working in recently. I enjoy working with colour and pattern using weave to translate what I am inspired by. This series of photographs was inspired by photographs that I took on a trip to Amsterdam. The photographs from Amsterdam are among the sample pictures below. I was influenced by the colours and shapes in certain photographs that contained graffiti, and also by the other colours on the streets, in particular the autumnal oranges of the leaves by the canal.

My work is spontaneous and I often unpick and change sections as I weave  because what I have previously planned may not look right, or the inversion (other side) looks better! More often than not I find that the reverse of a woven piece is more interesting than what I intended- but that is why it is so important to make samples and mix various patterns together to see how they compliment each other.

I found that my 'sample' piece was a work of art in itself, it began as a way of seeing how patterns that I had drawn out would look when woven, so contained rows of changing pattern and weft colour.
